Traditional applesauce is usually made by simmering apples until they’re tender enough to puree. But let’s face it, with our busy schedules these days, who really has time to stand at a stove waiting for apples to simmer? Solution: throw those apples right into the blender RAW. That’s right, raw applesauce is a thing and I’m here to tell you it’s just as good as cooked applesauce if not better! This Homemade Raw Applesauce Recipe is incredibly easy and quick to make.
For this homemade raw applesauce, all you’ll need are the following ingredients:
- Apples
- Brown Sugar
- Cinnamon
- Lemon Juice
- Water
What are the best apples to use for raw applesauce? Since you’re not going to be cooking the flavor out of your apples, it’s best to use a sweeter apple so that your applesauce doesn’t end up too tart. Sweeter apples include Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji or Golden Delicious. You can even use a combination of these apples for a more well-rounded taste.
If all you have are tart apples on hand (such as Granny Smith), you can still make your raw applesauce but you will have to adjust the sugar content accordingly to counteract the tartness. I use brown sugar in this applesauce recipe because it has a richer flavor, compliments the cinnamon well and adds a nice “caramelly” taste to the finished product.
This raw applesauce will keep in your fridge for up to a week thanks to the lemon juice in the recipe. It’s also a great addition to many baked goods such as muffins, breads and cakes. So, if you have some extra apples lying around and you’re in the spirit of Fall, go ahead and make this super easy, tasty and versatile Homemade Raw Applesauce recipe!
