Buttery Breaded Pierogies Recipe

Buttery Breaded Pierogies Recipe

Marrying into a part Polish family has really opened up a whole new world of pierogies for me! I’d never even heard of pierogies before meeting my husband. But these little potato and cheese stuffed delicacies have become a big part of my life. There are so many different ways you can cook pierogies and so many options to choose from. This particular recipe for Breaded Pierogies was shown to me by my mother-in-law, Crissy. It’s buttery and full of savory breadcrumbs. It’s pretty much just an enhancement of an already delicious dish. Bonus: Only 4 ingredients and VERY easy to make!

COOKING WITH FROZEN PIEROGIES

I LOVE using frozen pierogies because they taste just as good as freshly made pierogies but with so much less time and effort. They cook perfectly every time whether you bake them, fry them or boil them (check out my Pierogies with Garlic Green Beans for another easy recipe that uses frozen pierogies). For this particular recipe we use a combination of boiling and a little bit of frying. Other than the pierogies and water, there are only two ingredients needed to achieve the amazingly flavored breaded texture: Italian style breadcrumbs and butter.

COATING THE PIEROGIES

While the pierogies are boiling in a separate pot, you’ll prepare the breadcrumbs and butter in a large skillet. As you can see from the pictures, the breadcrumbs and butter mixture will develop a thick, “soupy” like consistency. Once the pierogies are done boiling, you’ll add them to the skillet and carefully stir them into the breadcrumb mixture until they are coated well. The finished pierogies should have a golden brown, “sandy” looking texture. It’s that simple!

Since pierogies are usually stuffed with filling ingredients such as potatoes and cheese, they complement protein filled meals quite nicely. I usually pair them with my BBQ Boneless Ribs and Bacon Brussels Sprouts. These pierogies have definitely become a recurring dish in my household due to their simplicity and short prep time. I’m hoping you guys enjoy them as much as I do. Read on for the full recipe below!

Ingredients

  • 16 oz frozen pierogies (about 12 pierogies)

  • 1 1/2 quarts water

  • 1/2 cup butter

  • 1/2 cup Italian style breadcrumbs

Directions

  • In a large pot, bring the water to a boil
  • Add the pierogies to the boiling water and let them cook until they float to the top (about 8-10 minutes)
  • Drain the pierogies from the water and set aside for now
  • In a separate skillet, melt the butter and then add the breadcrumbs. Simmer on low, stirring regularly until the mixture becomes thick and “soupy”
  • Add the pierogies to the skillet and mix carefully until they are all coated with the breadcrumb mixture. The breadcrumb coating will give the pierogies a “sandy” texture
